Yang Qianhua is Dean of the Department of Political Education at Guizhou Normal University, and was a United Board Fellow from 2008-2010.

“One of the top universities in the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University has an excellent academic record and I benefited from my wonderful four months’ stay there. As a faculty member, Ateneo’s student-centered pedagogy, which allows for independent learning that inspires curiosity and invites reflection, impressed me most of all. We lack this in China and I plan to explore ways to make changes in our own curricula.

“Service learning strategies also are well implemented at universities I visited in the Philippines, especially at Ateneo, where they emphasize social involvement and integration of academic learning and social service. This gave me many insights into methods of how service learning might be applied in my school’s course curriculum.

“The diversity of teaching methods I experienced here will be useful for my teaching. The United Board Fellows Program definitely plays an important role in my professional life.”
