Sidney Bata earned his master's degree at Fudan University (China) as a United Board Faculty Scholar.
“I am very thankful for the experience the United Board has given me. The chance to pursue my master’s degree has been a dream come true and this opportunity has opened my eyes to the academic world. On the other hand, it made me realize how much more I need to know about my chosen field, China and Chinese society.
“At my home institution, Ateneo de Manila University, I am shifting from teaching Chinese language classes to more Chinese social science classes. I have been asked to draft a new, three-unit course on Chinese society for the upcoming semester. This will be a ‘micro version’ of my master’s degree program in sociology at Fudan University. In developing the course, I can include some of my thesis research on Filipino migration to China in the globalization era. And having spent a couple years in China, I can better explain the writings and articles to my students.
“I still have weekly conversations with a faculty scholar from Vietnam whom I met at Fudan. We exchange ideas frequently, on matters about courses and the administrative side of school.” |

“...this opportunity has opened
my eyes to the academic world.”
