Neil Rupidara is currently on leave from Satya Wacana Christian University to pursue his Ph.D. in business at Macquarie University in Australia. As a United Board Fellow, he spent time at Macquarie and at St. Olaf’s College in the United States.
“The United Board Fellows Program, which I was involved in from 2004 to 2006, has been very significant in many ways to me. It has helped me develop as an academic, an administrator and a person. My experience, worldview, network and ideas have broadened.
“After my placement as a United Board Fellow at Macquarie University, we conducted a curriculum review of our academic programs at the Faculty of Economics at Satya Wacana Christian University (SWCU). One of the objectives was to increase student research experience in our undergraduate education. The review resulted in merging some previous courses and enabling students to take courses from other disciplines. At the same time, we also started to increase the research performance of our academic staff, as part of the overall efforts toward higher academic performance.
“Research for me is one of our key challenges in Indonesian higher education, as it is in other countries. Through my Ph.D. program, I have been able to present papers at a number of international conferences. My experience is proof for my colleagues at SWCU, especially at the Faculty of Economics, that they could do the same or even better than I did. International exposures allow us to compare ourselves with our counterparts around the world and help us aim higher in the future. Although I’m now on leave from SWCU, I still regularly contribute relevant ideas, both at the university level and especially at the Faculty of Economics, to foster research performance.
“I view that all that I have been doing is about facilitating change at Satya Wacana, more specifically at the Faculty of Economics. Successful change requires commitment and consistency in maintaining or developing aims, programs, practices and, finally, performance." |
