Educators and researchers from universities and colleges across Asia are finding innovative ways to apply digital technologies to the study of the humanities, as evidenced by presentations and discussions at the workshop on Digital Humanities in Asia:  Global Technologies and Local Knowledge.  The United Board workshop, held on May 20-22 in cooperation with City University of Hong Kong, brought together more than 50 specialists from 35 Asian higher education institutions to consider ways to share information and experience in this field.

A digital poster session and panel presentations at the workshop illustrated some of the ways in which these specialists are using technology to enhance the study of anthropology, religion, music, literature and language and other subjects in the humanities.  Specialists are developing digital collections that are distinctly Asian, focusing on music of the Tibetan plateau, Thai language instruction, Filipino folklore, Indian literature and other subjects.

The workshop also marked the launch of the Asian University Digital Resource Network, a collaborative effort to increase Asian institutions’ access to technical tools and strengthen their ties with other international digital networks.  The new network will provide a channel for faculty, librarians and IT staff from universities across the region to share information, models and resources; generate opportunities for collaboration; and facilitate an exchange of perspectives and experience in documenting, preserving and sharing local knowledge.

Further details on the May 20-22 program can be found on the workshop blog.  For more information on the Asian University Digital Resource Network, please see the program brochure or contact Avron Boretz (aboretz@unitedboard.org) or Anne Ofstedal (aofstedal@unitedboard.org).
